City of Hamilton – Community Heat Response Strategy – Public Health Services

The City of Hamilton’s Community Heat Response Strategy outlines actions to help protect residents from heat-related illness during periods of extreme heat. The Strategy builds on the extreme heat-related actions identified in the City’s Climate Change Impact Adaptation Plan and was developed through research evidence, consultation, and engagement with staff across relevant City divisions. Ten actions were identified to strengthen Hamilton’s response to extreme heat, with a focus on protecting individuals and communities at highest risk of heat-related illness.

As part of the Strategy’s evaluation, the City of Hamilton is engaging with community members to better understand awareness and knowledge of the cooling supports available during a heat wave. This event will provide an opportunity for community members to share what they know about the City’s cooling resources and services, including where to access information and supports to stay cool during extreme heat. Community feedback will help inform the evaluation of the Strategy and identify opportunities to improve awareness and access to heat-related supports.

K9 Lifelines

K9 Lifelines is a Guelph, Ontario-based organization specializing in psychiatric, mobility, medical alert, autism, and multipurpose service dogs. We offer two pathways to help individuals with disabilities access highly trained service dogs.

We focus on custom training to address the unique needs and lifestyles of each handler. At K9 Lifelines, we understand the profound impact a service dog can have on fostering independence, companionship, and overall well-being. Each service dog is trained to meet the specific requirements of their handler, and we offer ongoing support to our graduate teams.

Our Owner Assistive Program supports individuals in training their own service dog, providing guidance on everything from selecting a suitable puppy to advanced obedience, public access skills, and disability-specific task training.

Our Puppy to Lifeline Program provides fully trained, custom service dogs matched to the needs of their future handlers.
We have a variety of qualified teams across both programs. On average, it takes 1.5 to 2 years of training for a dog to be ready to take the public access test and graduate as a service dog. We also offer continued support to all teams after graduation to help ensure long-term success and confidence.
