Centre for Diverse Learners

Our mission is to support and empower neurodiverse learners through advocacy, education, and services. We aim to build a world where individuals with neurodiverse learning needs are included, empowered, and celebrated.

Our programs are designed to help students learn on their own terms, in the ways that work for them. In the short term, we teach students and parents how to advocate for their rights in the classroom. In the long term, we want to make sure they don’t have to. Our goal is a world where our organization isn’t needed – where every student automatically gets the help they deserve.

Disability Justice Network of Ontario

Disability Justice Network of Ontario (DJNO) was founded in 2018 by racialized disabled people in our community to build a just and accessible Ontario, wherein disabled people can create a world where we are free to be. This world is one where we:

  • Have personal and political agency;
  • Can thrive and foster community; and,
  • Build the power, capacity, and skills needed to hold people, communities, and institutions responsible for the spaces they create.

Our work is wide and varied, specifically aiming to uphold the principles of Disability Justice in all areas that reach into the lives of disabled peoples. These principles center the most impacted and challenge the economic and social system lives in all our work. Our work ranges from education to prisoner justice to housing and home care. Our work takes us from the local to the international—in all these areas, we fight for collective access and solidarity across our lived experiences and intersecting disabilities.

K9 Lifelines

K9 Lifelines is a Guelph, Ontario-based organization specializing in psychiatric, mobility, medical alert, autism, and multipurpose service dogs. We offer two pathways to help individuals with disabilities access highly trained service dogs.

We focus on custom training to address the unique needs and lifestyles of each handler. At K9 Lifelines, we understand the profound impact a service dog can have on fostering independence, companionship, and overall well-being. Each service dog is trained to meet the specific requirements of their handler, and we offer ongoing support to our graduate teams.

Our Owner Assistive Program supports individuals in training their own service dog, providing guidance on everything from selecting a suitable puppy to advanced obedience, public access skills, and disability-specific task training.

Our Puppy to Lifeline Program provides fully trained, custom service dogs matched to the needs of their future handlers.
We have a variety of qualified teams across both programs. On average, it takes 1.5 to 2 years of training for a dog to be ready to take the public access test and graduate as a service dog. We also offer continued support to all teams after graduation to help ensure long-term success and confidence.

LUCI

LUCI is an accessory to a power wheelchair. It mounts directly onto the powerchair base and integrates directly with the wheelchair’s electronics. LUCI provides advanced driver assistance through sensors that conduct a 360º scan of the chair’s environment 10 times per second. The sensors can identify stationary and moving obstacles, such as furniture, walls, and people, as well as, unsafe drop-offs, such as stairs, curbs or the edge of a ramp. The LUCI software will intervene to slow and then, when needed, stop the chair to prevent collisions and tip-overs with said obstacles and drop-offs.

LUCI’s software relies on three types of sensors, radar, ultrasonics, and camera-vision with infrared, to triple-check the chair’s surroundings. If the chair is headed towards an obstacle or unsafe dropoff, LUCI’s software is customized to the driver and will intervene by scaling back the driver’s input to the joystick to slow the chair down allowing the user time to navigate away. This ‘driver assist’ functionality, of slowing the chair before a collision or, for example, driving off a curb into traffic, gives the driver sensory cues (the slowing of the chair and a light on LUCI’s user interface), that call the driver’s attention to their immediate surroundings. If the driver is unable to redirect their driving path because of LUCI will completely stop the chair to prevent a collision or tip-over and prevent possible injury and wheelchair damage.
