Our Committee tries to represent the needs of all disabilities. To do this, it is important that we have as many different perspectives as possible so we can make sure all voices are being heard. We need people of all abilities to give of their time and knowledge to make the City of Hamilton a more accessible place to live for everyone. We will accept anyone, whether you have a disability, know someone with a disability, are a caregiver, a medical professional or just want to help, we need you to volunteer.
We have four main working groups that cover the majority of accessibility issues.
Built Environment Working Group (BEWG)
The BEWG is responsible for the physical structure of the City. The includes, roads, sidewalks, building access and building design. In essence, the foundation of our City. More specifically, we review capital build projects, snow removal, bus stop design, construction redirection, urban braille, bypasses and more.
Housing Working Group (HWG)
The HWG is responsible for all housing related issues, This can mean housing accessibility and rent geared to income applications, but as stable housing depends on household finances, we can also address issues of income instability, homelessness, shelters and the Canada Disability Benefit to name a few examples.
Outreach Working Group (OWG)
The OWG is the ACPD’s community forward working group. We are responsible for seeking out new engagements with other organizations and educating the public on the work of the ACPD. we attend related special events as well as organize and host the Annual Accessibility Trailblazer Awards and Ability First Accessibility Fair. The OWG also oversees this website and the current volunteer recruitment campaign.
Transportation Working Group (TWG)
The TWG is responsible for overseeing accessible transportation options in the City of Hamilton. This can include DARTS, HSR, Accessible Taxis with Blue Line and Hamilton Cab, Taxi Scrips, Rental E-Scooters and so on. We meet with staff regularly and raise points of concern in order to improve conditions for people of all disabilities.
We need your help to make these working groups better. We ask that you be willing to share your experiences with the group to give us the widest perspective possible. Disability comes in many forms and we want to see to as many people’s needs as we can. We also ask that you share some of your time and skill set in order to give us more opportunities to create change going forward.
It is an election year and our membership will be open to all Hamiltonians for the next term of Council to select at the end of the year. This is an opportunity to see what work we do and if it is something you can see yourself committing to.
If you are interested in volunteering for the ACPD’s Working Groups, please fill out the form below and we will respond as soon we can.
